Málaga is the Andalusian city with the widest gastronomic variety. We don’t just say it because it is our city, but it is as well the Andalusian city with more Michelin stars restaurants. 6 out of the 14 prized restaurants can be found in Málaga.
However, we don’t have to look at haute cuisine to understand that Málaga’s cuisine is delicious. We can find the success in their simple ingredients, but delightful, obtained from its sea and mountains. Málaga combines these two worlds perfectly and in just a few kilometres you can eat a really fresh fish or some mountain dishes which makes you fall in love. Málaga is tasty. It has a sea, mountain wine and ember flavour.
We guess you want to know where and what to eat in Málaga, so we are going to let you know our main recommendations.
Espetos de sardinas: espetos are a group of 5-7 sardines pricked with a cane, which are grilled with embers on a typical small boat at the beach. You have to eat them in front of the sea, and if you want to try in a specific place, you can do it at any ‘chiringuito’ in El Palo. You have to eat them with your hands!
Gazpachuelo: gazpachuelo is a soup that you can try cold as well. It is made with water, fish, potato and freshly made mayonnaise. A simple and incredibly tasty dish that you can try in the iconic restaurant Antonio Martín, in La Malagueta, an area near the downtown which is one of the most wonderful scene of the city.
Chivo lechal: although it is not as famous as the others, one of the most emblematic dishes in Málaga are the ones which are made with a young goat. Traditionally, they are cooked in the first months of the year, coinciding with the coldest days. Casabermeja is a small village near Málaga and they have some of the most well-known restaurants which prepare this dish as it was prepared years and years ago. A good example is Asador Puerta de Málaga, just 20 minutes from the city.
These three dishes are just some examples of all you can find out along the city, but Málaga’s gastronomy is bigger. Loosing in the bars of Moreno Monroy street, in the whole city centre, should be mandatory, or do it in the restaurants of Fuengirola or Marbella, under the light of a shiny sun, is luxury for everyone.
Do you want more recommendations? We have asked to our team and some of the places you will get right for sure are La Alvaroteca, Casa Antonio (en El Palo), Mesón Andrés, Chiringuito Andalucía, El Higuerón, Venta El Pinar en los montes de Málaga, La libélula o Restaurante Los Enebros.
Málaga tastes good, really good. And you are about to find it out.
